With the advent of AI and the explosion in computing power and data centers, the race for a wearable device more powerful, functional, and user friendly than smartphones has peaked. The industry of smart glasses is poised to grow to
30-50 billion USD globally by 2030, based on public estimates, and will represent an essential piece of hardware for the broader adoption of AI amongst consumers. The world biggest technology companies (e.g. Meta, Google, Apple, Huawei, Bitedance,
etc.) are all competing to ship the most stylish, functional, and technologically disruptive pair of AI glasses.

In this talk we’ll explore emerging commercial applications of semiconductor manufacturing and silicon
carbide for near-eye displays and smart-glasses. I will report on the working principles of near-eye, transparent displays and focus on two topics: (a) the use of Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) to make the world brightest and most compact laser
projectors for smart glasses; and (b) the recent benefits brought to this field by the development of optical grade silicon carbide.
