In the area of carbon materials, the hollow space inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is considered to be an attractive location for the confinement of luminophores. However, the strategies developed to encapsulate and get emission out of the confined luminophores are still limited (1-5). Even after successful insertion of emitters, the low lying electronic levels of CNTs tend to quench the luminescence by energy/electron transfer processes (6-8). The emission of Eu (III) complexes is hardly affected by the ambient environment since originated by internal ff transitions (9). Moreover, the high quantum yield and long lifetime make Eu (III) complexes appropriate candidates to be encapsulated into the hollow space of CNTs.Here we report the photophysical properties of a hostguest hybrid, in which a suitably designed Eu (III) complex has been confined into multi walled CNTs.
