In introducing this IYIL Symposium, I wish to thank the Board of Editors for having chosen the University of Naples “L’Orientale”–the oldest school of Sinology and Oriental Studies in Europe–to host it in its summer seat in the beautiful island of Procida. This year’s Symposium has been devoted to “The Future of the European Convention on Human Rights System”, a matter of great concern these days.There is no doubt that since the adoption in 1950 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) the overall situation, as regards human rights both in the Western and Eastern European States, in the “old” as well as in the “new” democracies, has substantially improved.
