The terahertz (THz) frequency region of the electromagnetic spectrum (from 0.1 to 10 THz, corresponding to millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths) is the spectral range that separates electronics from photonics. Although access to this spectral range is strategic for application areas like communications, medical diagnostics and security, this has been historically difficult because of the technical challenges associated with generating, detecting, processing and radiating such high-frequency signals.
