In the year 1966, Nobel Prize winner CK Kao concluded his study on “Dielectric-Fiber Surface Waveguides for optical frequencies”[1] envisaging that “a fiber of glassy material (…) represents a possible practical optical waveguide with important potential as a new form of communication medium”[1].
