PROGETTO “CLEAN” - Valorizing Sustainable Plastics through a CLEver use of NANoparticles.

This proposal aims at providing sustainable alternatives to ubiquitous petroleum-based plastics. This ambitious objective will be pursued through an innovative use of nanoparticles, which will be used as a clever tool for manipulating the microstructure and, through it, the properties of blends of bio-based polymers and/or recycled plastics. The employ of such sustainable materials is nowadays prevented in many important industrial sectors because of their unacceptably low performance. The challenge is proving that a clever nanoparticle-assisted materials design can lead to green formulations able to compete with petroleum-based plastics in terms of costs and properties. The starting point are the promising results obtained in the last years by the proponent research team, which prove the great potential and feasibility of the proposed strategy. The missing fundamental understanding and its capitalization to get technological breakthrough will be pursued through a thorough study or the materials over different length scales. The solid complementary skills of engineering, chemistry and physics of the young members of the research team will combine in a synergic way, maximizing the probability of success of the project.
