Silvia Scalese received her Master Degree in Physics in 1994 and the PhD Degree in 1998 at the University of Calabria (Italy). Both thesis works concerned chemisorption of molecules and/or alkali metals on metal surfaces studied by surface characterization techniques, such as photoelectron and Auger spectroscopies and electron diffraction. She carried out part of her PhD thesis work in the Solid State Group, at the Dept. of Physics of the University of Fribourg (Switzerland).
In 1998 she got a post-doc fellowship at the INFM Research Unit of Catania (Italy), and after a training period of 4 months in the laboratory of Molecular Beam Epitaxy at the Institut für Halbleiterphysik in Frankfurt/Oder (Germany), she was working on the MBE growth of Si-based materials for almost 4 years. Since December 2001 she has got a permanent position at the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems of the Italian National Council of Research (IMM-CNR) in Catania (Italy), where she worked on the synthesis and characterization of Si-based materials for microelectronics, in particular ion implantation and diffusion of dopants in silicon. Since 2005 her scientific interests focused on the synthesis and characterization of carbon-based nanomaterials. More recently her research activity has focused on the use of carbon nanostructures (nanotubes, graphene and graphene oxide) for health and environment-related applications, such as the development of innovative environmental and bio-sensors, and the study of nanocomposite materials for water purification and energy applications.
She authored more than 100 peer-reviewed papers on international journals, 1 book chapter and 1 patent, and was supervisor of 10 Master Degree / PhD thesis works in Physics, Materials Science and Electronic Engineering. She organized and chaired the two Editions of the Workshop on Carbon-based low dimensional Materials “CARBOMAT” in 2010 and 2011. She actively participated to several National and International Research Projects, and is Referee for several international scientific journals.
